Todd Donald is a Homestead EXPERT and Recommends HOMESTEAD SITE BUILDER because Homestead Websites Are Easily Maintained and accessible with a very user friendly interface. The Homestead website package is an all inclusive, very easy to use and inexpensive solution for those who are not highly technical, but who still have the desire and capacity to login, check statistics, make changes to type, or even creative designing. With Homestead, the technical challenges are decreased greatly and it may very well be the easiest to work with, log-in and see traffic stats, manage the site, manage domains, or purchase and assign new domains. Since I work with the homestead product, I can even start working on a project with your existing homestead account if you have one. Ready to take the plunge from free trial to paid subscription? Let me make that transition a bunch easier, while making sure you get your money's worth! All in all I recommend homestead because it's easy, all inclusive and the design possibilities are fairly flexible.

HOMESTEAD PROS:
Homestead is a great all in one solution because the control panel is tight. Their package allows you to monitor site stats, buy and manage domains, build sites, setup email addresses and email lists as well as option up to pay per click, etc. They offer a lot of good advice for building, designing, SEO (most of that they got from me - they used to not have any of that)... Anyway it's certainly a great way to get into site building. The other big benefit to homestead, is that they are owned by Intuit and have a very professional support mechanism.
HOMESTEAD CONS:
The biggest downside to homestead sites, is that you're limited to hosting your site on their servers and it's a huge challenge to move a site away from homestead, simply because the software WYSIWYG editor creates proprietary code which is non-standard. By contrast, a Dreamweaver built site can be hosted anywhere.
The other drawbacks are that no matter what, a site at homestead (even with a personal domain name), is still just a sub-domain of homestead.com and therefore search engines may consider it "technology related" due to the primary domain it's associated with and all the homestead gobbly-gook in the code. A huge stumbling block is that the sites built with homestead also use what's called "absolute positioning", which is not all that bad so long as your visitors are looking at your site with Internet Explorer, (roughly 60% of people still use IE), but the other 40% using Mozilla and Safari could see your site as somewhat funky looking and it gets really crazy looking if they have their font settings turned up higher than normal. By contrast sites built with either EZDJWebsites, or Dreamweaver do not suffer from these anomalies.
FYI... Important Info You Should Know About Homestead:
One of my personal peeves about Homestead, is that while you can feel comfortable knowing you're doing business with a big company, that can also work against you too... The service department is very process oriented, and the support staff has limited authority or decision making ability, so sometimes even the simplest requests or questions turn into major headaches. I also highly recommend that you study their ironclad Membership Agreement carefully, because it's a legally binding contract which does a great job protecting homestead's interests, but not their clients. Homestead's CEO also preaches and practices the philosophy of "Firing Customers", which is easily found by googling: Homestead Fires Customers. Basically what this means is that if any homestead client becomes a pain in the neck, or says something to upset one of their staff, or inadvertently breaks one of their seemingly endless no-no's in the membership agreement, that customer's account is simply cancelled, which is what they term "firing a customer".
Truth be told, I was a homestead customer for six years. Homestead's CEO Fired Me! I'm glad he did. Best thing that ever happened, although it hurt like hell at the time. Long story short, I started with Homestead in early 2000's and after spending upwards of $10,000 in hosting fees I was fired. I brought the problem on myself by sending Justin a nasty email in response to his mass email about how happy he was to sell his company to Intuit for $170,000,000... Well, YEAH. That's great - Justin's bank account is fat, what about me, the loyal customer? Getting thrown to the wolves at Intuit was not my idea of a good time and I let him know. I apologized to him, but it was too late. Like I said though... I'm actually glad now and I wound up really expanding my horizons. It forced me to find a commercial host NewRamp and it forced me to think outside the homestead box and learn to build sites with Dreamweaver and EZDJWebsites.
It was the hardest for my customers at the time, because I had to move all their sites into their own homestead accounts. Most transfers went smoothly, but there were a few clients that were either confused, or thought I was trying to rip them off, or wanted to transfer and assume ownership of sites I had built, but wanted to do it in such a way that it became logistically difficult, too time consuming or expensive for me. © 2008 Todd Donald
In addition to building sites with Homestead, I also use and recommend EZDJWebsites by ProDJ and I do Dreamweaver sites that I can host on a lightning fast commercial server, or host wherever you want.
